Practice
Scott is a partner in TheallGroup LLP in Toronto, where he practises civil litigation and also has a
broadly based counsel and advisory practice in the fields of public and private
international law, international business and trade, constitutional and
administrative law, and transnational litigation for both private clients and,
from time to time, foreign governments. Scott has appeared before both Ontario
and federal courts, and in the Supreme Court of Canada, including as principal
counsel in the first sovereign immunity case to reach the Supreme Court of
Canada under the State Immunity Act, 1982. He has been twice
appointed as sole arbitrator by the Canadian Transportation Agency for large
commercial disputes.
Scott is a past President of the
Canadian Council on International law, and an active participant in the
Canadian Bar Association, having previously been elected National Section Chair
for Constitutional Law and Civil Liberties (1991-93) and later for
International Law (1998-2000). He is also a founding editor of the Canadian
International Lawyer, a law journal developed specifically to serve the
practical needs of of international law practitioners. Scott has lectured and
published widely in Canada and abroad on international law and constitutional
law subjects and, since entering private practice has taught as an adjunct
professor at the University of Windsor Law School, the University of Ottawa Law
School and Osgoode Hall Law School at York University.
Professional Activities/Associations
Scott is a Fellow of the Chartered
Institute of Arbitrators, a member of the ADR Institutes of Canada and Ontario
and of their respective Arbitration Panels. He is also a member of the Canadian Councel on International Law, the Canadian
Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association, the American Society of
International Law, the American Bar Association section of International Law
and Practice, the International Bar Association, the International Law
Association and the International Commission of Jurists (Canadian Branch), and
ADR Chambers International.
Scott currently serves as an invited
private sector member of the Government of Canada Delegation to the Hague
Conference on Private International Law, Special Commission on Jurisdiction and
Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments (1997-2005), on the Executive of
the International Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association, and on the Advisory Board of the Canadian International
Lawyer.
