Professor McLaren has practical experience as a commercial lawyer and is Counsel to MacKewn Winder Kirwin LLP. He is a labour, commercial and sports arbitrator, and mediator.

Appointments include: International Court of Arbitration for Sports {CAS} appointed as on site ad hoc arbitrator at the Winter Olympics in Japan (1998), the Summer Olympics in Sydney (2000) and Commonwealth Games in Manchester (2002); arbitrator for the International Commission on Holocaust Era Insurance Claims {ICHEIC}; Inquiries-Rugby Canada (1999), Chair of the Independent International Review Commission on Doping Control, United States Track and Field (USATF) (2000/01), Chairman of the ATP Tennis Anti-Doping Tribunal (2002 - present), Co-chief arbitrator for the ADR Sport RED system for Canada. Arbitrator for the British Columbia International Commercial Arbitration Centre, Arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association {AAA}, Arbitrator for the United States Anti-Doping Agency, Arbitrator for the National Hockey League Players’ Association and its sports agents.
