Practice
From 1962 until January 1999, John
practiced at Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago. Prior to his retirement at age
65, John worked in the areas of antitrust and trade regulation (both civil and
criminal litigation), product liability and general business litigation. In the
late 1990s, John had responsibility for certain loss prevention matters at
Kirkland & Ellis, including active supervision of the conflicts of interest
procedures.
Since retiring from private
practice, John has continued his active arbitration practice which began in
about 1968. He has arbitrated 17 significant commercial cases since 1990,
mostly under AAA commercial rules (including AAA international rules), some as
panel chair and a number as sole arbitrator.
His experience includes cases
involving numerous industries such as pharmaceutical, petroleum products,
sports equipment, asbestos, pulp and paper, glass containers, automobiles,
tires and newspapers. Disputes resolved recently by John as an arbitrator have
involved domestic and international contract matters, intellectual property and
ownership of technology, computer service agreements, real estate sales and
development, sale of goods, requirements contracts and supply contracts,
employment agreements and compensation, fee agreements, damage claims, pipeline
construction, agency and representation agreements, and transportation
contracts.
Professional Activities and Associations
John is a member of the American
Arbitration Association, the London Court of International Arbitration, the
Chicago International Dispute Resolution Association and ADR Chambers
International. He is a member of the American and Chicago Bar Associations. In
the International Bar Association, John has served as co-chairman of the
General Professional Programme Committee (1996-2002) and as member of the
Council of the Section on Legal Practice (1996-2000; elected as lifetime member
in 2000).
John has chaired the continuing
legal education committees in the ABA and the IBA. Since 1985 he has served on
the ALI-ABA Committee on Continuing Professional Education.
Other Associations
John is president of the Association
of American Rhodes Scholars and is active on behalf of Oxford University in
various positions. He is a retired U. S. Naval Reserve officer, having served
as a regular USN officer during 1957-60.
