Bryan Williams received his B.Comm.
in 1957 and his LL.B. in 1958 from the University of British Columbia.
Bryan practiced law in Vancouver
from 1961 to 1995 as a partner and Senior Counsel to the law firm of Swinton
& Company.
During the time of his practice of
law, Bryan taught at the Law School of UBC and published several legal
articles.
Bryan was the National President of
the Canadian Bar Association for 1986/87, he is a Fellow of the American
College of Trial Lawyers and a member of the International Bar Association.
In 1990, Bryan received an Honorary
Doctorate of Laws from the University of Victoria.
In 1995, Bryan was appointed to the
British Columbia Court of Appeal and in 1996 was appointed Chief Justice of the
Supreme Court of British Columbia.
In May 2000, Bryan rejoined the law
firm of Swinton & Company (now Miller Thomson LLP) as Associate Counsel.
Bryan is a recipient of the
125th Confederation of Canada Medal of Honour.
Bryan is a past director of the
World Wildlife Fund for the period 1987 to 1996. He is a Board Member of the
Pacific Salmon Endowment Fund and a Director of the Canwest Western Independent
Producers Fund.
Mediation and Arbitration Interests
Bryan has wide legal and judicial
experience in various aspects of law, with particular interests in commercial
and negligence disputes, environmental, government and labour disputes, as well
as knowledge of the issues involved in Aboriginal matters.
Mediation and Arbitration Experience
Bryan has chaired approximately 300
mediations/arbitrations during the years of his practice, including two in the
United States with the American Arbitration Association. He is a member of the
CPR Arbitration Group. Since returning to his law firm, Bryan is engaged
primarily in the practice of mediation and arbitration.
In addition to being a member of ADR
Chambers Inc., the Canadian company of the ADR Chambers Group of companies,
Bryan is a member of ADR Chambers International, the division of ADR Chambers
Inc., providing internationally recognized arbitrators and mediators worldwide,
as well as a member of the London Court of International Arbitration.
